An old but useful way of thinking about your image. It is a tool for adding a lot: mood; mystery; illumination - tonality. These days it is kind of more applicable to post-process, however you still need to learn your camera’s data capture and biases with regard to recovery from shadow and bright areas. With both of these, you have a powerful creative tool.

Even if you do not involve yourself in step by step process, it is good to be mindful of what you want do with shadow and light. And understanding the capability of the sensor, it would be useful to check the exposure range before shooting. And of course bracketing your exposure will give you more options down the line. Exposure blending exists in Adobe software, which is useful. I do not do exposure blending, I would but I no longer walk the Adobe path.
